It Escalates!

Friends, lets weigh in on a topic that’s been on my mind lately:

Is ordering a margarita made from scratch high maintenance?

My friend says it is. (Friends off forever?) I don’t know if it’s an Alberta/Canadian/everywhere except the southwestern United States thing, but anytime I ask if I can get a margarita made  ‘from scratch’ with fresh lime juice instead of green syrup the bartender looks at me like I have two heads. It’s just tequila, triple sec, a little soda and a squeeze of fresh lime. Ok, the juice of like 40 limes, but still. That’s not too weird, is it?! I mean, if I’m paying $10 a drink, I don’t want radioactive corn syrup in it. Or diabetes.

So many first world problems to sort through.

Alright. Moving along… here’s a quick weekend recap. I did the Canadian Thanksgiving thing at my parents igloo…

My dinner contribution was purple carrots and a bottle of akvavit… aquavit(?) that a friend gave me for my birthday.  He brought it from Sweden and I’ve been saving it for a special occasion. Have you ever tried it?!  I think its herb/spice infused vodka? It tasted a bit like fennel. Anyways, I liked it and thought it went down smooth. My brother in law on the other hand, nearly choked and died. “IT ESCALATES!” he squeaked. And then I nearly choked and died from laughter.   I didn’t understand what his problem was until my Dad explained, “It’s part of your Scandinavian heritage. You can hold your liquor”.  HAHA. YES.

Brb, I need to Google something.

Ok, I’m back. I just researched akvavit and here’s what I found out:

“Drinking Culture: Aquavit is an important part of Scandinavian drinking culture, where it is often drunk during festive gatherings, such as Christmas dinners and weddings.”

Drinking culture?! Wikipedia gets me.

Other than Thanksgiving dinner, my weekend was fairly low key. I went for a few outdoor walks and savoured the fall colours, the scent of leaves and wood burning fireplaces. Decomposing leaves are one of THE best smells, hey? So earthy.

-I wore a touque for the first time this season. And sunnies.  It’s getting cold out! Ground breaking stuff.

-Some food faves:

Other than turkey dinner, THIS:

{I get these local/pastured maple pork breakfast sausages from the farmers market. They’re so good!}

{Pesto sockeye salmon, broccoli, carrots & peas smothered in butter <3}

-I put pumpkin pie spice in my coffee. And watched IronMan Kona. THE END. Living the dream, friends. Living.the.dream.

Now that everyone is brain dead from reading that, here’s some interesting links:

Everything In Moderation Is Killing People. via Authority Nutrition. YES!!! The title is a tad dramatic, but it’s a topic that I’m continually discussing with people who are trying to beat their sugar/carbohydrate “addiction”.

How Exercising Less Helped Me Lose Weight via Mind Body Green. I think many of us assume that exercise has to be ‘all or nothing’ or that we need to kill ourselves in a Bootcamp class to be “healthy”. It’s not true! We should just do what we love. Walking is the most under-valued form of exercise AND therapy – it’s so mentally, spiritually and physically satisfying.

How To Detox Your Organs For A Complete Body Cleanse – via Chatelaine.  DON’T WORRY, it’s not another stupid juice cleanse. Side rant: If your goal is diabetes, try a juice cleanse!  UGH.

Pumpkin Bread {Grain, nut and dairy free} via Against All Grain. When we eventually do our Canadian blogger meetup, can we please make this?!

What did you have for Thanksgiving dessert?  I ate a TON of pumpkin pie filling + whipped cream. It was amazing.

Did you watch Ironman Kona this weekend? Or football? Do you hate sports?  IM Kona is pretty much the only sporting event that I get excited about.

Canadian Blogger meetup + whoever else wants to come.  Can we please make this happen? I will totally take the lead and organize something – travel and event planning is one of my specialties. I’m envisioning Banff or Canmore. Let’s do it! Rocky mountain adventures + fit friends + great food = IT WILL BE SPECTACULAR.   Does Summer 2014 work for everyone?

  1. 1. I definitely feel like thanksgiving was a sham since I made no dessert! (Waiting for American thanksgiving and my moms apple pie) plus, Tyler bought pumpin PIE FILLING and not just the purée, so um yeah…

    2. I totally thought that was yet another of the Robert Downey Jr. Franchise movies. Must get out of my couch potato weekend rut and realize ironman is also an athletic event. Doi

    3. Yes yes and YES. Let’s do this. And get weird.

    • I think it’s time to take our relationship to the next level and do some weird shit together BEFORE the blogger meetup. Oh man, this sounds so awesome/gross. Hahahaha!
But seriously – lets make Tyler drive us around in your neighborhood’s meth van, then maybe go for a run and drink?

  2. I don’t think ordering a margarita from scratch is high maintenance. I think it’s intelligent. Whoever came up with the alternative is an idiot.

What a random think to yell after drinking liquor?! That’s hilarious.

Wish I were Canadian so I can join in on the fun. I’ve been trying to organize a blogger meet up here but these NorCal girls are a pain! 😉

  3. Haha I never thought about ordering a margarita from scratch as high maintenance… Most of the places that I’ve been to ofter “specialties” that are scratch made. Either way, order what you want – you’re paying for it! I’m envious of your Canadian Thanksgiving and can’t wait for ours down here in the states 🙂 Turkey + stuffing + sweet potatoes + cranberry compote + pumpkin pie… Yum!

  4. 1. No Thanksgiving for me yet, so I’m going to have to say mine was the ice cream I had after sushi on Saturday. The dessert I’m planning for my family belated Thanksgiving next weekend though? It’ll be epic.

    2. No cable = I don’t want most things. Except TV shows that I decided that I can’t live without.

    3. OH MY GOD YES PLEASE DO THIS. I would absolutely be there!

  5. Oh my gosh YES I’d so be up for a blogger meet up out West! As long as it’s after July 10ish, which is when I finish my internship. 😛

Sorry I can’t give you input on the margarita debate – I never order those! I’m not the biggest tequila fan. Actually lately I’ve just been ordering wine when I go out. Talk about high maintenance haha.

I had pumpkin pie with whipped cream for Thanksgiving dessert too. Seriously the best! I also split a butter tart with my sister because I couldn’t resist, even though I was sooo full.

    • “I’m not the biggest tequila fan” <--- I don't get it. What do you mean?! K, we'll make sure we plan it for after the 10th. Maybe even into Sept if we have to.

  6. I don’t think ordering a Margarita from scratch is high maintenance at all. In fact, I’d totally do it! I don’t understand why the bartender looks at you funny. What’s the big deal!?!

Yay for Thanksgiving! It’s my favorite holiday, but we still have a little over a month to go in the States before it arrives. I do plan on eating lots of pumpkin pie though!
