A Weekend Done Right: Emerald & Peyto Lake

Hey! I have a few things to share with you guys. But first, how was your weekend?  Hard to believe it’s August already, hey? There are so many things I want to do before summer is over and I’m getting worried I’ll run out of time!

It was a long weekend here in Canada and I took Friday off ‘just because’. I need to implement four day weekends more often.

Early morning in Canmore – it’s been smokey and hazy from all the nearby forest fires lately

Have you ever been to Rocky Mountain Bagel Co? DO IT. I stop in there to grab a coffee from time to time, but I recently tried one of their Power Balls and I’m in love. It’s a mix of almond butter, pecans, dates, spirulina, matcha green tea and coconut.  That thing held me over for several hours!  I’m thinking I need to recreate these next time I make up a batch of Protein Balls.

I got to check something veerrrrry special off my adventure bucket list this past weekend. I’m not sure if you know this about me, but I’m OBSESSED with vibrant blue-green bodies of water. I just want to stare at them all day.  I’m not sure if it’s the colour,  that I’m a water sign or maybe I’m autistic… (this sentence and explanation makes no sense. I’m going to stop now)  but I’m absolutely fixated on them. Is that weird?

Anyways, a friend and I went adventuring on Sunday and one of the places we visited on our travels was Emerald Lake. It’s near Field, BC and I’m not sure how long it took us to get there because I was under the influence of Gravol. Maybe 15 minutes or 1.5 hrs? I can’t be certain…

Okay, keep in mind I took these photos with a little old point and shoot camera, and the lake was even more vibrant in person.

Right? Mmhmm. Yep. This exists.

We rented a canoe and spent an hour on the water. So fun!  You can walk a 5km loop around the lake, but we preferred to take in the view from a boat.  There’s  lake front accommodations that I’ve love to spend a night in sometime. I had visions of curling up on one of the wrap around decks with a book and a bottle (or five) of wine.

Ummm… can we talk about how blonde my hair is now? I made the mistake of telling my hairdresser, “do whatever you want!” and now I look weird. 🙁    It looks nice against the Emerald Lake backdrop, though.  Once fall rolls around, I’m going back to dark blonde.

Next up: Peyto Lake. I’ve been DYING to visit it since moving out here and I’m delighted to have checked it off ‘the list’.

I can’t. It was too much for me to handle. HOW IS THIS REAL.

I would like to be a mermaid in Peyto Lake.  I should just go for it. Why not.

We finished off the day with Greek food at Balkan in Banff. I was legit malnourished and starving by this point. Over the weekend, I either came down with a mild case of food poisoning (I projectile vomited cherries ALL over my bathroom – twice. Woo!! I’m actually proud of myself for that one) OR I’m a huge wimp. I couldn’t stomach anything other than a few bites of bread for TWO days.

We went to town on a big platter of assorted stuff: pita bread, hummus, salad, all different kinds of meat, rice, potatoes and wine.  It was so good and I can’t wait to eat there again. Everything was super garlicky and now I stink.

This was the perfect re-introduction to real food again. Not eating for two days really rattled me. I lost who I was. Never again.

Lastly, look how cute Lauren and I are. We made matching breakfast bowls the other morning.

Plain yogurt, bananas, blueberries, cherries (I hate cherries now. I can’t even type the word without scowling) and Nature’s Path Qia cereal.

Things I’m never eating again:
Daiya “cheese”

I feel sick all over again.

I’m really excited! Lauren’s Mom just arrived from Ontario and we’re taking her to Lake Louise this morning for a hike. I’m going to introduce you guys to her later this week. She’s so cute and I wish she was staying forever.

Tell me about one of the most scenic places you’ve visited. Or, do you have any places in mind that you’d love to see?

What do you usually get done at the salon? Do you let your hairdresser have complete control?

  1. …you realize that you’re just adding to the ‘Sam should move out West’ argument, right? I can’t even handle how gorgeous that lake is – that’s incredible.
I’ve never done the ‘do whatever you want’ thing with a hairdresser before..I kind of want to but I’m picky about my hair and I’d be terrified that I’d hate it.

    • I’m hoping I can lure you here with mountain photos sooner rather than later. COME TO ME

  2. Oh my gosh that water is gorgeous! When I went to Puerto Rico last year I couldn’t believe how blue/green the water was. Especially compared to Florida/North Carolina/dirty Pittsburgh river water ahah I loved it.

  3. how is this your life?!?! C’s cousin is staying with us right now and she just flew in from Banff. I think she is grossly disappointed by Toronto….we clearly don’t have anything that looks like THAT!

    • You guys should fly back to Banff with her. I’ll be waiting with open arms and vodka

  4. UM I WANT TO COME VISIT (fingers crossed re: my crazy rando e-mail yesterday haha). I just seriously pinned this into my travel inspo board. Most scenic place I’ve probably been is Hawaii or Vietnam… actually or maybe Tierra Del Fuego in Argentina. Oregon Coast was pretty beautiful last weekend too 🙂

    • HAHA as soon as my work days calm down a bit, I’ll do some research into this for you!! 🙂

  5. Yeah. I want to jump into my computer screen right now, THANKS! This is now on my bucket list, spot number one.
Love your matching breakfasts! That was my friend Daliza and me all throughout our Florida trip. Too cute.
Glad you had an amazing weekend!!

  6. love Peyto soooo much – we call it bear hug lake. I actually just stood and looked at it for the longest time….or until I was elbowed by a tourist, but it felt like a long time.

  7. I think you know the question I want to ask kekeke.

……I also think I need to rethink the black forrest recipe I had planned. Thanks alot.

I love your photoshopping skills- how did you get the mountain background and blue lake looking like that?

  8. More often than not, the answer is yes.

I use this really great program called PicMonkey. It’s how HLB’s create fun graphics for one ingredient recipes and generate Pinterest workouts. It’s amazing, have you heard of it? 😉

  9. So gorgeous! I need to visit there. =) And my hairdresser is awesome at knowing what will look good on me. I usually have an idea of what I want, and just have to tell him and he gets it spot on! I’m actually getting mine chopped (!!!) tomorrow + ombre’d (again!) tomorrow so I’m super excited!
